Latics boss Roberto Martinez has his sights set on Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo and has the support of his boss Dave Whelan.
The Daily Mirror says the 32-year-old Tamudo is out in the cold at the moment and will be out of contract next summer, paving the way for a move when the January transfer window opens.
Chairman Whelan has already moved to sack Marlon King after his conviction for sexual assault and ABH.
That will allow Martinez to move in the market for a striker and he is known to be an admirer of the Spain international.
Tamudo's agent Tomas Duran is trying to arrange talks with Wigan and Martinez next week as he fancies a move to England.
