Portsmouth, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly fighting it out to sign Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo.

The Spain striker has been in talks to rip up his contract with the Catalan club and is close to agreeing a compromise which would see him loaned out for the rest of the season ahead of a permanent move in the summer.

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez was keen to sign the 32-year-old in the summer, but Spanish newspaper Sport says the Lancashire club are now out of the running.

Pompey are set to lose Aruna Dindane and Nwankwo Kanu to the Africa Cup of Nations in January and Paul Hart is keen to bring in new players if owner Ali Al Faraj comes good on a pledge to provide funds.

The size of Newcastle could attract Tamudo despite their relegation and the North East club have a clutch of former La Liga players who would help him settle in, such as Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique and Jonas Gutierrez.

Spurs are the biggest club showing an interest, but Tamudo could not expect a regular first-team place at White Hart Lane and the move would be dependent on Roman Pavlyuchenko leaving north London.
